We’ve all heard that, no matter how collected a person may seem on the outside, no one has it all together. Probably we all know in our heads that it’s true, but insecurity can be extremely loud. Growing up, I was a very shy person. I was the student who never wanted to speak in class, whether I knew the answer or not. I hated the very thought of public speaking, and I did not believe what people often said about it getting easier the more you do it. Life’s funny, isn’t it? After four years of standing in front of classes of 20-40 students (and even some of 50-200!) nearly every day, I do still get nervous, but I’ll admit it at last: it does get easier.

Aside from practice, something that helped me become more confident speaking in front of others, as well as just conversing with strangers, was the realization that often they were just as nervous and unsure as I was. (In fact, they were often more nervous, because we were speaking in my native language.) The more I focus on trying to put the other person at ease instead of on making a “good” impression, the less nerves get in the way.

It’s all relational. Making relationships with people that leads to questions; relationships lead to curiosity. Then you start studying. It’s all about relationships. My friend just came here and had a Bible and just started asking questions. I would just answer his questions and curiosity. I didn’t really tell him to read the Bible, he just did it on his own. He told me he had been reading. I asked him to come to our Bible study and then he started studying with us. Over the summer, we kept in touch as he continued to study the Bible, and we had conversations weekly about whatever he was reading. A week before I returned to China, he said “Can you do that washing when you come back?” I was thrilled to say yes.

I’ve discovered that success is not measured by the times I do well in class. It is not added up as the number of changed people I can “add to my belt.” Rather, it is the faithfulness of continuing to shine in the darkness no matter how I feel. Sometimes this is an incredibly difficult thing to remember. China has a way of knocking the wind out of you sometimes (physically, emotionally, and spiritually). When I’m headed to the class that I dislike teaching, I so easily forget that it’s not just about the world’s version of success! Daddy is showing me over and over and OVER that my job is to reach out to His children and shine light where He has placed me. I can’t change hearts, that’s His job! Only He can convict people to ask the right questions at the right time. I can’t count the number of times that I have been able to share Good News while being here! It is truly humbling.

I joined China Now because it is presently the best opportunity for me to go to another country for more than just a few weeks with a clear in-road for sharing the gospel and making disciples. I thrive on building relationships with people and letting others know they’re seen and cared about, and I love gaining insight into why God created each person to be and encouraging that. If I can connect even a few students with their Creator so they can know Him too, this venture will be worth it. I’m excited to experience living in China and joining in with the work God is already doing there to draw people towards Him.
